Arrogant critics of the Guardian are all too falliblePosted: September 23, 2010
A recent comment on You Tube really makes me laugh. The You Tube video is about the identification of the remaining 5 elders (of the 24 elders) by Joel B. Marangella, the third Guardian of the Faith.
The comment by a heterodox believer says:
“hahaha. this is just funny and shows how little knowledge these people and their so called guardian have. Abdu’l-Baha himself named Ḥájí Mírzá Muḥammad-Taqí as one of the 24 elders. “so in this letter joel or joe or whoever the so called guardian is, have managed to go aginst the very word of Abdu’l-Baha and omit Ḥájí Mírzá Muḥammad-Taqí as one of the 24 elders. Good job Joe.”
This is so typical of the misinformed. They arrogantly correct us when they do not have their facts straight.
I think the mislead commentator is confused by the wrong statement of Adib Taherzadeh in his book: The Child of the Covenant, p. 240 in which he wrote:
“The Vakilu’d-Dawlih was a distinguished believer who was designated by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as one of the ‘four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats’ mentioned in chapter 11 of the Revelation of St John the Divine. [Of the other 23 ‘elders’, only 19 have been named by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá i.e. the Báb and the 18 ‘Letters of the Living’.]”
It seems that Taherzadeh has repeated the mistake of one of Persian writers who has quoted only a short section from one of Tablets of Abdu’l Baha to an individual immediately after the title “Chapter forty one – about the twenty-four elders mentioned in the Book of Revelation”:
(Translation): “You have questioned regarding the pentad blessed persons; one of them is Haji Mirza Muhammad-Taqi, the Afnan, four others will be explained later” and then another section from another Tablet from Abdu’l Baha in which He explains:
“Regarding the four and twenty elders, they are they Bab, the 18 Letters of the Living and five others who would be known in the future.”
22 years after ascension of Abdu’l Baha the first Guardian said: “So far we do not know who these five other are”:
“Regarding the four and twenty elders: The Master in a Tablet, stated that they are the Bab, the 18 Letters of the Living and five others who would be known in the future. So far we do not know who these five other are.”
(Shoghi Effendi, Directives from the Guardian, p. 21) also (Baha’i News, No. 171, November 1944, p. 2)
If Haji Mirza Muhammad-Taqi, the Afnan (Vakilu’d-Dawlih) was one of the “elders” probably Abdu’l Baha would have mentioned that in the “Memorials of the Faithful” when He wrote about him (page 128) and surely Shoghi Effendi would have not said “So far we do not know who these five other are”
Vakilu’d-Dawlih was named one of Apostles of Baha’u’llah.
